REFLECTIONS FROM A SKETCHBOOK
My aesthetics find form and voice through the art of printmaking. This series “Reflections from a Sketchbook” spans a vast area of time and space. While each piece depicts a certain place at a certain moment the actual creation is much larger than that.
The starting point for each piece began while I was on a journey, hiking through the Sierra’s, walking through the Tuscan hills, traveling somewhere. When I’m on the road my world is different; I’m not preoccupied or consumed with the busyness of life. I give each moment the time it deserves. As I look for images I am always awed at the beauty of form around me.
I am a printmaker and the studio provides an opportunity for me to translate my images into intaglio prints. Here I use polymer plates, traditional etching inks, Japanese papers, chein colle, and Hahnemuhle copperplate to transform my vision. The elements that are essential in my work are line and balance.I am concerned with how one line interacts with another and how the juxtaposition of weight and space creates balance.
This series is composed of years of looking and a desire to remember. Each piece is the result of an entire experience, the observation, the mood, the thoughts and feelings. They are my signatures, irreplaceable and personal, yet a simple translation of the moment.
